L^ATEX and TEX are sophisticated document typesetting systems. L^ATEX is a mark-up language where you edit text documents (using any editor of choice) and include mark-up to tell the formatter how to produce the final printed page. Unlike proprietary word processing systems, like MS Word, L^ATEX is available freely on most platforms and documents produced on one platform will be identical to that produced on another platform.
